The origin of Drew Estate Cigars, the creators of Liga Privada, is located in New York City. Here in the middle of Manhatten, Marvin Samual and Jonathan Drew started a cigar store in the World Trade Center. There they sold the cigars to the businessmen and women working there. The year is 1995 and they can just keep the head above water. They also produce their own cigar called La Vieja Habana. If they visit a cigars trade show in 1997, they get a lot of positive feedback about those cigars.
They realize that their future is in the making of cigars. Hereby Jonathan Drew decides to move to Nicaragua to lead a small factory that they buy with borrowed money. They produce not only the cigars, they also make the tobacco themselves. During the first time spent by Jonathan in Nicaragua, he sleeps on an old mattress above the factory.
